IMb vs. IMpb: Which Barcode Does Your Mail Need?
The split follows the shape of the piece. Letters and flats, meaning postcards, envelopes, self-mailers, catalogs, and magazines, qualify for automation prices only when they carry an IMb built to spec. Commercial parcels, boxes, padded mailers, tubes, anything USPS handles as a package, fall under the IMpb rule instead, where the barcode is not a discount option but a condition of commercial parcel pricing.
The two codes also report into different systems. IMb scans come off letter and flat sorting equipment and flow into Informed Visibility, the USPS reporting feed for mail owners, which is how a mailer watches a job move through processing plants. USPS Tracking, the piece-level event history a recipient can pull up by number, is built on the IMpb. Plenty of operations need both: a company that mails statements and also ships product runs an IMb program and an IMpb program at the same time.
For all their differences, the two codes rhyme: each carries who is mailing, which piece this is, and what service applies, so machines can route and account for a piece without ever reading the address. That shared logic is why the same data discipline serves both programs.
Inside the Intelligent Mail Barcode
The 31 digits under the 65 bars
Every IMb encodes a digit string organized into five fields, and each field has a job. A two-digit Barcode ID supports presort and endorsement handling. A three-digit Service Type ID declares the mail class and requests services, tracking data or electronic address correction, for that specific piece. The Mailer ID identifies whose mail it is, the serial number makes the piece unique within that mailer's volume, and the routing field carries the delivery ZIP+4 plus a two-digit delivery point. That combination is why one code can sort a piece and report on it at the same time.
Serial discipline matters more than it looks. Reuse a range too soon and scan data from two different jobs lands in the same bucket, which corrupts the reporting for both. Disciplined shops manage serial ranges centrally so a statement run never collides with a campaign.
Where the IMb goes on the piece
On letters, the barcode prints either inside the address block, directly above or below the address, or in the clear zone across the lower right of the envelope; on flats it rides in the address area. It must sit on the address side, in dark ink on a light background, with the space around it kept free of other printing. Window envelopes add a wrinkle: the full barcode has to stay visible through the window across the entire range of insert shift, which is a check our prepress team makes on a physical mockup, not just the PDF.
Full-Service and the automation rate
USPS prices automation mail at two participation levels, Basic and Full-Service, and the gap between them is where the economics sit. Basic requires a correct barcode on each piece. Full-Service adds serial numbers kept unique for 45 days, electronic documentation describing the whole mailing, and Intelligent Mail barcoded tray labels and container placards; in exchange USPS takes an additional per-piece discount and returns free address correction data and start-the-clock visibility showing when a job entered the network. The catch is reconciliation. The electronic documentation has to agree with the physical mail, barcode by barcode, or the discount is at risk. USPS grades that agreement continuously on the Mailer Scorecard, and persistent mismatches turn into postage assessments after review. What IMb tracking actually shows
Each time a piece crosses an automated sorter, a scan posts a timestamp and location. Read in sequence, that history tracks pieces through processing scans and predicts the in-home window; the last data point comes from the final sorting operation, and the delivery date is a projection from it rather than a confirmation at the door. For letter and flat mail that is the useful truth: the feed shows a drop is moving, shows which regions are running slow, and pins the week the response window opens.

What the Intelligent Mail Package Barcode (IMpb) Requires
The IMpb shares half a name with the IMb and almost nothing else. It is a linear GS1-128 barcode readable by standard scanners, and USPS requires it on commercial parcels along with an electronic manifest describing every piece in the shipment. USPS built the requirement to bring package visibility up to the standard commercial shippers expect from private carriers, which is why compliance is tied to pricing rather than offered as an upgrade. Because the mandate covers essentially all commercial package volume, the practical questions are construct, placement, and paperwork.
Construct and the human-readable number
The tracking number encoded in an IMpb most commonly runs 22 digits; longer constructs exist and are defined in USPS Publication 199, the IMpb implementation guide on PostalPro. Inside the construct sit a Service Type Code identifying the product and any extra services, the shipper's Mailer ID, a package serial number, and a check digit. Many labels also carry the destination ZIP in a separate routing prefix ahead of the tracking barcode, which keeps parcels sortable even when an address block is damaged in transit. USPS also requires the tracking number printed in human-readable form directly below the bars, so a label with missing digits fails the specification even when the barcode itself scans.
Label placement and the Shipping Services File
Placement rules exist because packages are not flat. The barcode belongs on the address side of the parcel, on a flat surface, kept clear of folds, seams, edges, and tape that would distort the bars under a scanner. Alongside the physical label, the shipper transmits a Shipping Services File, the electronic manifest USPS matches against parcels as they are scanned, through eVS or an approved vendor system. When commercial packages show up without a compliant barcode and a matching manifest record, USPS applies a per-piece assessment to the mailing, which means the requirement is enforced on the postage invoice, not just written in the guide.
Mail classes that require an IMpb

USPS Programs Mailers Get Wrong
Three names come up in every serious conversation about barcoded mail, and all three are routinely explained wrong: ACS, eInduction, and FAST. Here is what each one actually does and, just as important, what it does not.
OneCode ACS works after the mailing, not before
OneCode ACS is the address correction service tied to the IMb, and the word that matters is after. Once USPS processes a piece addressed to someone who filed a change of address, or a piece that cannot be delivered as addressed, the mailer receives the update as an electronic fulfillment report. It is a post-mailing service by design, requested through the barcode's Service Type ID, and nothing about it cleans a list before the job prints.
Hygiene before the drop is separate work with separate tools. CASS standardization and DPV confirmation prove each record is a real delivery point, and NCOALink catches people who have moved, all run against the file before production starts. Our data services team works both ends of that loop, cleaning the file up front and folding the electronic corrections back in afterward, so every drop mails to a tighter list than the one before it.
eInduction and FAST are different systems
Drop-shipment paperwork is where explanations most often fall apart, so here is the clean version. eInduction replaces the paper PS Form 8125 and 8017 round trip for drop shipments: containers carry barcoded placards, the eDoc already on file supplies the payment evidence, and verification happens when placards are scanned at the entry facility. The program applies to destination-entry volume, mail inducted at network distribution centers, sectional center facilities, and delivery units, the DNDC, DSCF, and DDU entry points.
Reserving dock time for those same trucks happens in a different system entirely. FAST, the Facility Access and Shipment Tracking system, is the USPS appointment scheduler for destination entry, and it verifies nothing. One program is verification, the other is a calendar, and they share nothing but the loading dock.
Neither applies to the typical job we produce. Our mailings enter the network at origin, at the Lakeland BMEU, under Full-Service IMb, and acceptance there runs against the eDoc our team files through PostalOne! for every job.
Getting set up: the Gateway, TEM, and the MDA
Real IMb onboarding runs through three named things, none of them at a dock. Mailers register on the Business Customer Gateway, the USPS portal for commercial mail, and are issued a Mailer ID there. Mailers preparing their own electronic documentation validate it in TEM, the Test Environment for Mailers, where test jobs are checked before live submissions count. Questions about barcode print quality, contrast, and placement go to a USPS Mailpiece Design Analyst, the specialist who reviews artwork and physical samples against the specification.
None of that setup lands on customers who hand the job to us. The Mailer ID, the presort software, the eDoc pipeline, and the barcode quality checks already exist on our side, which is most of the practical argument for using a mail service provider instead of building the stack internally.
Where the Scan Data Earns Its Keep
Barcode compliance is table stakes; the return comes from what a mailer does with the data. Three verticals show the mechanics.
Insurance. Renewal offers, nonrenewal and cancellation notices, and policy documents all carry dates that matter, and some carry formal notice obligations. Scan history gives an insurance mailer a timestamped record that a specific piece entered the mailstream and kept moving, plus a market-by-market read on predicted in-home dates so agent follow-up lands the same week as the envelope. When a policyholder disputes whether a notice was ever mailed, the file answers with a piece-level trail instead of an assertion.
Utilities. Statement mail runs in billing cycles, a different slice of the customer file every business day, and the machine only works if each cycle lands ahead of its due date. Scan data broken out by cycle and by region shows a billing office which weeks are stretching before late-payment calls do, in time to shift a drop date or staff the phone queue. It also separates a production delay from a postal delay in an afternoon, which is the first question asked whenever payments dip.
Government. Public hearing notices, tax mailings, and benefit communications carry documentation duties most commercial mail never faces. Because every piece posts its own scan history, the mailing record builds itself while the job runs: what entered the system, when, and how it moved.
