Design Tips That Actually Matter for Print

These five things cause the most reprints and wasted money. Get them right the first time.

Resolution: Design at 300 DPI minimum. Canva exports at 300 DPI by default, but only if you choose "PDF Print" as the export format. PNG and JPG exports drop to 96 DPI, which looks blurry in print. Here's how to check your PDF's DPI before sending it.

Color mode: Canva is RGB-only, but your printer converts to CMYK during production. Bright neons and electric blues will shift. Stick to bold, saturated colors that survive the conversion. Dark reds, navy, forest green, and warm yellows translate well.

Bleed: Our templates have 0.125" bleed built in. Keep all text and important images at least 0.125" inside the trim line (the safe zone). Anything outside the safe zone might get cut off.

Address block: For mailed pieces, leave a clear 4" x 2.5" area on the back for the address, barcode, and indicia. Our templates mark this zone. For EDDM postcards, the addressing area requirements are different - check the template markings.

File export: In Canva, always export as "PDF Print" with crop marks and bleed enabled. This gives your printer exactly what they need. Upload the exported file to our free file checker to verify everything looks correct before ordering.

Postcard Sizes Explained

Choosing the right postcard size affects both your postage cost and your response rate. Larger postcards get more attention in the mailbox but cost more to mail. Here's how the six sizes compare. For a deeper comparison of standard vs. oversized postcards, see our size comparison guide.

Size Postage Class Best For Cost Range
4" x 6" First-Class ($0.44) or Presort Quick promos, reminders Lowest
6" x 9" First-Class ($0.69) or Presort Most marketing campaigns Mid
6" x 11" First-Class ($0.69) or Presort Detailed offers, menus Mid-High
6.25" x 9" EDDM ($0.223/piece) Neighborhood saturation Lowest per-piece
6.25" x 11" EDDM ($0.223/piece) EDDM flyers, menus Lowest per-piece
8.5" x 11" EDDM ($0.223/piece) Letter flats, catalogs Lowest per-piece

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these templates really free?

Yes. Click "Open in Canva" and start designing immediately. No account needed to preview. A free Canva account lets you edit and export. No strings attached.

Can I use these templates with a printer other than MPA?

Absolutely. The templates include standard bleed and safe zones that work with any commercial printer. But if you send them to us, we'll run a free file check and catch any issues before printing.

What's the difference between regular postcard sizes and EDDM sizes?

EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail) postcards must meet USPS minimum size requirements - they need to be larger than 6.125" x 11.5", OR thicker than 0.25", OR rigid. Our EDDM templates at 6.25" wide satisfy the width requirement. Standard postcards (4x6, 6x9, 6x11) are for addressed mail using a mailing list.

What file format should I export from Canva?

Always choose "PDF Print" with crop marks and bleed enabled. This gives the highest resolution (300 DPI) and includes the bleed area your printer needs. Never send a JPG or PNG for professional printing. Here's how to verify your file's DPI.

How do I add my mailing list addresses to the postcard?

You don't - your printer handles that. Design the front and the non-address portion of the back. Your printer (like MPA) will add the address, barcode, and postal indicia during production. For EDDM, no addresses are needed at all - mail goes to every door on the selected routes.

What paper stock should I choose?

For postcards, 14pt or 16pt card stock is standard. Add UV coating or soft-touch lamination for a premium feel. We can help you choose the right stock for your budget and goals.
